Engineering has been a part of Texas A&M University since its inception in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. Today, the Dwight Look College of Engineering is the largest college on the Texas A&M campus with more than 350 faculty members and more than 15,000 engineering students in our 14 departments.

Texas A&M University establishes ocean engineering department

“This department is important because the field of ocean engineering is being rejuvenated with new areas of interest in off-shore/deep-water technology, renewable energy, air-sea interaction engineering, coastal and ocean environmental protection and preservation,” said Girimaji. “These new challenges call for creative solutions in classroom engineering instruction and fundamental research, and we look forward to providing our students with these opportunities.”

The department has access to several world-class technology centers at Texas A&M, College Station including the Aerospace Technology, Research & Operations Center; the Geochemical and Environmental Research Group; the Center for Autonomous Vehicles and Sensor Systems; and the Center for Geospatial Sciences, Application and Technology. Texas A&M Formula SAE team hosting 2016 car reveal event

In order for mechanical engineering students at Texas A&M to participate in the project and receive course credit they must enroll in the MEEN 401/402 senior design course in the fall and spring semester of their senior year. Yuval Doron, lecturer in the department, teaches the class throughout the year and acts as a mentor to the students.

Doron’s years of engineering design and fabrication expertise helps him teach students how to approach the engineering challenges they will face as they build their racecars.

“As an instructor, it’s important I teach the students how to engineer a safe, fast and competitive race car,” Doron said. Read More

Magic or design? Students plan for driverless go-kart

What does it take to earn a diploma at Texas A&M University? For a group of seniors in the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution, their final undergraduate degree requirement involves a display of street magic — or so it appears.

The team’s task is to equip a go-kart so that the electronic vehicle will follow another go-kart all on its own, as in: without a driver. This study in intelligent transportation systems is the capstone design project plan for one male student and three female students in the department’s Electronics Systems Engineering Technology program as they prepare for graduation in December.
