Both Sonet/SDH and Ethernet play a major role in the short to medium metro-access networks that extend to 50 km. Picolight has come up with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) transceiver to address this burgeoning market. The 1310-nm, small-form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver provides designers of access/first mile equipment with greater performance, lower power consumption, higher package density, and lower cost than previous models.
The PL-SPL-IC-VB3 can be used for OC-12/STM-4 (622 Mbits/s) and OC-3/STM-1 (155 Mbits/s) Sonet/SDH, as well as for 100BaseLX10 Ethernet (125 Mbits/s) products. In the past, several different types of transceivers had to be used for these applications. But this transceiver combines the most important capabilities into one unit, reducing cost of ownership, consolidating inventory, and simplifying deployment. It works with single-mode fiber and possesses a short reach range of 10 to 12 km, an intermediate reach of 21 km, and a long reach of 42 to 50 km using the appropriate Sonet specifications.
The PL-SPL-IC-VB3 SFP transceiver features a bail latch and SFF-8472 digital diagnostics. It consumes just 400 mW. Samples are available now, with full production coming later this month.
