The TMD3782 color sensor delivers ambient light intensity (lux) and color measurement, giving mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets) the ability to automatically adjust display color and brightness for optimal viewing and power savings. According to developer ams AG, it’s the first integrated ambient light, color (RGB), and proximity sensor optimized for operation behind dark glass to drive intelligent-display systems in mobile devices. The 3.9- by 2.4- by 1.4-mm module can sense light much like a human eye, bringing more sophisticated control of display brightness and color. Also, the combination of ambient light and color sensing leads to more brilliant display colors. On-chip filters minimize ultraviolet and infrared light effects as well as enable photopic response, improving light and color sensing accuracy. The proximity sensor, factory-calibrated to a distance of 100 mm, allows tablets to eliminate false ambient light-sensing measurements by detecting when the user’s hand/finger blocks light from reaching the sensor. Radially structured photodiodes create a uniform angular response when mounted under the 360° module lens.
