Cannulated (hollow) shafts are now available with the company's size 5, 8 and 10 brushless DC motors, allowing fluids, air streams, vacuum, and even cables to be passed through the motors. The hollow shaft motors are expected to find wide use in handtools, such as employed in medical and industrial fields. The cannulated, double-ended shafts can be coated with different materials to ensure the integrity of user-defined seals. Other motor features include: speed ranges to 100,000 rpm; double-shielded stainless-steel bearings to help ensure long life; four-pole rotor construction to minimize cogging; and Hall-effect sensors to provide smooth commutation.
