A novel buck-boost powermanagement IC helps extend battery life in smart phones, digital still cameras, and other single-cell, lithium-ion (Li-Ion) powered multimedia devices. The TPS63000 dc-dc converter delivers up to 96% efficiency over an input voltage range of 1.8 to 5.5 V, while generating an output current up to 1.2 A. It can provide up to 28% more run-time compared to a standard high-efficiency buck converter with a 3.3-V output.

Texas Instruments’ device, which is based on a fixed-frequency, pulse-width-modulation (PWM) technique, uses synchronous rectification. Because it can support input voltages as low as 1.8V, designers are able to implement newer, denser lithium-based battery chemistries in TI OMAP processor- based handsets and other multimedia applications.
