The SP4405 electroluminescent-lamp driver IC features a regulated output voltage that's designed to deliver constant brightness and reduce board space requirements, component count and EL lighting system cost. The device converts a low-voltage dc battery input into a high-voltage ac output suited for driving EL lamps in battery-powered applications. The IC produces a constant output voltage regardless of changes in input voltage or load characteristics. The result: consistent lamp brightness over the life of the battery and increased efficiency to extend battery life. On the chip is a high-voltage switchmode boost converter, an oscillator and a high-voltage H-bridge output. Operating frequency for the oscillator can be set using a single external resistor with excellent stability over wide variations in operating temperature.
