Proximion Fiber Systems AB has introduced a fiber patch cord with built-in dispersion compensation (DC) for use in new and existing high-speed fiber networks. Dispersion is the limiting factor in reaching maximum data rates of 10 Gbits/s and higher without errors in fiber-optical systems. Special dispersion compensation products have been available, but this one comes in patch-cord form and can replace space-consuming boxes while saving money.

The patch-cord module uses Proximion’s continuously chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) technology. Integrating the FBG with the patch cord yields a very rugged and cost-effective dispersion solution. There’s no need for a separate DC box. Service providers can use the patch cords to connect boards in their systems. The patch cord also replaces the two patch cords that are usually required. It suits use in Sonet/SDH, 10-Gbit/s Ethernet networks, cable TV systems, and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks.

The FBG is installed in a 30- to 110-cm long patch cord. The cords are available in different flavors that tightly control dispersion from –1300 to 1300 ps/ns over a 6.5-nm wide band. Typical insertion loss is about 2 dB. Custom versions are also available. The patch-cord DC modules will be available for shipping in the third quarter of 2009.
