Plextek has developed a reference design for an automotive in-vehicle telematics unit based on Wavecom technology, as a first step in the partnership between the two companies. The cost-effective platform offers a customisable and proven telematics solution that is ready to manufacture and therefore provides a rapid time-to-market, says Plextek.

The unit has a range of on-board features in addition to the GSM/GPRS wireless connectivity, including GPS positioning, data processing and storage, an odometer and a smart card reader.

The reference design uses existing blocks of IP from both companies. In addition to its on-board features, which can be remotely upgraded with the latest software, it offers options such as FM radio, CD and MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free operation and an external audio input. Based on Wavecom modules, the unit is compatible with GSM/GPRS and CDMA, as well as DSRC wireless standards.

The platform is a 1-DIN unit, which makes for easy in-vehicle mounting, and can be adapted to align with new European Union services, such as the eCAll and eSafety programmes.

Silicon Laboratories developed what it claims is the industry's most integrated embedded modem solution using the company's fourth-generation silicon direct access arrangement (DAA) technology in its ISOmodem products. The ISOmodem family now reduces the number of components and board space by an additional 30 percent compared to competing solutions.
