Inverter Helps Backlight Large FPDs Uniformly

Dec. 1, 2001

Designed to work with large, 18.1" to 21.3" diagonal flat panel displays (FPDs) backlighted by six cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), the 8mF dc/ac inverter provides six transformers, one for each CCFL in the flat panel, mounted on a single, 9.5" x 2.5" pc board. This is said to provide uniform, high-resolution lighting across all of the displayÕs six CCFLs with every start. Using an 18.1" FPD, for example, the manufacturer says it was able to deliver 235 nits of brightness, a wide viewing angle, 16.7 million colors, 25-ms response time, and a 50,000-hour CCFL life, with a required starting voltage of 1500 Vac. Large FPDs using the 8mF inverter are expected to find use in desktop monitors, financial displays, industrial and medical monitors, and kiosks. The 8mF dc/ac inverter is priced at $32.55 each/1,000.
