To lower power consumption while supporting ultra-mobile, Internet-connected battery-powered embedded devices, the Express-MLC COM Express type 2 module enlists an Intel Z500 series Atom processor and a US15W system controller hub. Sporting a smaller footprint, the Atom processor shares the same architecture as Core 2 Duo processors and supports hyper-threading technology. The SCH US15W integrates a 3D graphics core with dual independent display support on either the integrated 24-bit LVDS or through a dual SDVO extension. Based on a PCI Express bus architecture, the Express-MLC module plugs into custom-made, application-specific carrier boards. A basic version supports two PCI Express x1 lanes, LVDS, SDVO, 8x USB 2.0, SDIO, audio, and an LPC-bus. The module is also available with as a wider feature set that adds a PCI-bus, PCIe based GbE LAN, and PCIe based SATA. Expect samples in May and production in July.
