\[August 1, 2006\] The four-member PIC18F4685 family of 8-bit controller area network (CAN) microcontrollers provides either 80 KB or 96 KB of flash memory, paired with 1 KB of EEPROM to accommodate complex CAN designs. The MCUs come in 28- and 44-pin TQFP, DIP, and SOIC packages. Other features include 3.3 KB of RAM, a 10-bit a/d converter with eight or 11 channels, ECCP PWM and one standard CCP, one SPI and master I2C port, one USART for RS-232/-485 and LIN serial interfaces, two analog comparators, one 8-bit and three 16-bit timers, programmable brownout reset and low-voltage detect circuits, and an oscillator with eight selectable frequencies ranging from 31 kHz to 8 MHz. The four MCUs gain design support via the MPLAB IDE and MPLAB ICD2 in-circuit debugger and the PICDEM CAN-LIN 2 demonstration board. Prices for the PIC18F4685 family start at $5.26 each/10,000.
