Neubiberg, Germany: Infineon Technologies claims that its new Gigabit Ethernet physical layer (PHY) IC is the most energy-efficient on the market. The XWAY PHY11G chip complies with EEE guidelines for energy efficiency, and is the smallest-footprint IC for gigabit home-networking applications, says the company.

The IC targets all major broadband applications, including xDSL and PON routers in home gateway solutions, IP phones, PC motherboards, and consumer applications such as IP-TVs, IP set-top boxes, game consoles and printers.

The PHY forms the foundation for enabling high-speed data transmission at 1Gb/s throughputs, which is the next-generation standard for broadband connectivity compared to today’s 100Mb/s networks.

For example, with Gigabit Ethernet, copying the content of an 8GB flash card to a networkattached storage drive requires less than two minutes, compared to more than 20 minutes with current-generation Fast Ethernet connectivity.
