The shift from central to distributed or point-of-use power processing has received another boost with the introduction of a new series of low-wattage dc-to-dc converters. With a weight of just 17 grams and a size of only 1" x 1" x 0.47", the UNR SM Series converters can be installed using automatic, vacuum pickup pick-and-place equipment and can be soldered using reflow processes, with the devices' gull-wings said to eliminate shadowing effects in IR reflow ovens. In addition, standard lead-tin solders reportedly reflow around the tin-plated copper leads easily over a 170°C to 235°C temperature range. These non-isolated dc-to-dc converters come with a 1.8V at 2A, 2.5V at 2A or 3.3V at 3A output and a 5V or 12V nominal input. Other features include efficiencies as high as 87%, 30-mVP-P output noise without filtering, and a 20-µs transient response without output buffering.
