Making Variable Refresh Rate Performance Comparable (Download)
Variable refresh rate (VRR) technology is now a baseline feature across modern displays. From gaming monitors to laptops, support for Adaptive-Sync protocols is now effectively ubiquitous, with broad enablement across GPUs and display interfaces.
At the same time, as adoption of VRR has scaled across the industry, the challenge has been to ensure that performance claims by display manufacturers are consistent, comparable, and reflective of real-world behavior. Displays may advertise similar specifications, such as refresh rates of 144 Hz, 240 Hz, or higher, yet deliver meaningfully different user experiences depending on factors such as gray-to-gray (G2G) transition behavior, overdrive-induced artifacts, flicker, jitter, and frame handling characteristics. This makes it difficult to establish true apples-to-apples comparisons based on spec sheet values alone.
