Hackster announces winners of the "Invent the Future" competition
Earlier this year, Hackster, an Avnet community, partnered with Arduino to launch the Invent the Future design challenge, inviting innovators worldwide to use Arduino UNO Q to develop AI-powered solutions for real-world challenges spanning robotics, industrial IoT, gaming, home automation and social impact.
Over the course of the competition, participants from around the world submitted projects that showcased creativity, technical expertise and a passion for turning innovative ideas into real-world applications. After reviewing the entries, judges selected six standout projects that exemplified the spirit of the challenge.
Meet the winners
- Best in Show ($5,000 prize) - Edge-AI Spectrophotometer: Industrial Quality Control: A low-cost spectrophotometer powered by edge AI on Arduino UNO Q that detects contamination in real time, autonomously scores quality and generates reports.
- Best in Robotics ($3,000 prize) - Curie: An AI companion for ADHD and cognitive focus grounding. Curie is an expressive desktop robot that uses edge-AI vision to track distractions, manage ADHD and keep users conversationally on task.
- Best in Industrial IoT ($3,000 prize) - HaloSense V1: A wearable sixth sense for spatial awareness. HaloSense V1 is a haptic headband that senses north, people or targets with no screen required.
- Best in Gaming ($3,000 prize) - RCT IRL: Roller Coaster Tycoon Ratings in Real Life: Using an Arduino UNO Q and an IMU, this project lets riders rate real roller coasters like the classic Roller Coaster Tycoon game.
- Best in Home Automation ($3,000 prize) - Smart Coop 2.0: A connected system designed to make poultry care easier and more efficient.
- Best Social Impact ($3,000 prize) - Smart Water Guardian AI: An affordable, real-time water quality monitoring solution with on-device anomaly detection built on Arduino UNO Q.
"This challenge showed that great ideas can come from anywhere," said Dianne Kibbey, Senior Director, Community Strategy and Hackster.io at Avnet. "Participants from around the world used accessible hardware and their creativity to develop solutions that address real-world challenges. We're proud that Hackster provides a platform where innovators can share their ideas and bring ambitious concepts to life."
The Invent the Future challenge showcased the power of combining accessible hardware, edge AI and a global developer community. More importantly, it highlighted how innovators everywhere are applying technology to solve meaningful problems and create new opportunities for the future.
