Deemed the industry's smallest 10-bit, magnetic rotary encoder chip, the AS5040 measures 5.3 mm x 6.2 mm in a lead-free SSOP and integrates Hall elements, an analog front end, and digital-signal processing. The device operates at either 3.3V or 5V and is configurable via an internal, one-time programmable resistor. It provides absolute, incremental, and PWM output signals simultaneously, and a user-programmable index-and-zero position allows rotational speed measurements. Additionally, a synchronous serial interface output provides absolute position data. Other features include failure detection and an operating temperature range from –40°C to +125°C. Price is $4 each/1,000. AUSTRIAMICROSYSTEMS AG, Raleigh, NC. (919) 676-5292
