Insulation and continuity tester

The MIT485/2TC-LG2 insulation and continuity tester, designed specifically for the telecommunications and cable testing markets, replaces this vendor’s MIT480 tester. The handheld instrument features fixed test voltages of 50 V, 100 V, 250 V, and 500 V, as well as variable test voltages from 10 V to 500 V. Insulation testing can be performed up to 100 GΩ at 500 V. A gated access feature to 500 V prevents accidental application of high voltage to sensitive equipment. The MIT485/2TC-LG2 features a 3-terminal connection for tip, ring, and ground testing. The measurement pair is selected from the new T-R-G button on the front panel, omitting the need to connect and disconnect leads to perform the full range of testing on a cable pair. The feedback-controlled insulation test voltage of the MIT485/2TC-LG2 is accurate to +2%, -0%, providing a more accurate test voltage without the risk of overvoltage damage to the circuits. The MIT485/2TC-LG2 offers fast continuity testing with a user-selectable test current of 20 mA or 200 mA. Continuity testing covers 0.01 Ω to 1 MΩ without the need for manual range switching. The unit provides DC and true RMS AC voltage measurements up to 600 V. It offers onboard test-result storage and Bluetooth downloading capability. Rechargeable options for AC and charging are available. With a safety rating of CAT IV 600 V, the MIT485/2TC-LG2 features a redesigned case, back-stand, and 6-cell battery compartment with separate fuse access. The instrument is over-molded for increased protection and achieves an IP54 weatherproof rating. Megger

SMD pulse transformers for Gigabit Ethernet and PoE

The ALT4532 Series of pulse transformers now includes new types for Gigabit Ethernet and Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. The new ALT4532P type is designed for emerging 2.5GBASE-T (2.5-Gb/s) and 5GBASE-T (5-Gb/s) LAN applications as well as 1000BASE-T (1-Gb/s) applications with 600-mA PoE. The new ALT4532H type is compatible with the 10GBASE-T standard (10 Gb/s). The components feature a compact SMD package with dimensions of 4.5 mm x 3.2 mm x 2.9 mm. With the new ALT4532 components, the vendor is responding to the rising demand for compact pulse transformers for high-speed LAN interfaces—in particular, for the growing number of IoT devices. These SMD components are suitable for circuit-board layouts with many pulse transformers. Unlike conventional products with toroidal shaped cores, the new TDK transformers feature a special core design that is optimized for fully automated production and winding processes, resulting in stable quality. The discrete ALT4532 types offer designers greater flexibility for circuit-board layouts than conventional LAN modules that combine pulse transformer and common-mode filters in a single package, the company said. Main applications include LAN interfaces for network devices, communication equipment, digital appliances, and IoT devices. TDK Corp.

Hardness testers

The latest release in this series of hardness testers, including the HR-530 (maximum specimen size height: 250 mm; depth: 150 mm) and the HR-530L (maximum specimen size height: 395 mm; depth 150 mm), features an electronic control, giving it capabilities for Rockwell, Superficial Rockwell, and Light Force Brinell hardness testing. The testers can test the hardness of an inside ring wall without cutting the ring (all models). Minimum diameter is 34 mm, but inside diameters as small as 22 mm can be tested using the optional 5-mm diamond indenter. A color touch screen displays results of statistical calculations and graphic functions, which can be stored as text data. The touch-panel display can be mounted on top of the tester to save space. Touch-screen functions include direct hardness scale selection. The required hardness scale can be selected with the touch panel. The initial test force and loading force are automatically set in accordance with the selected scale. The testers also offer curved surface compensation and measurement: The curved-surface function enables curved surfaces, including round bars and spheres, to be tested for hardness as easily as flat surfaces. The touch screen provides statistical calculation of the maximum value, minimum value, mean value, and standard deviation when analyzing multipoint test results. It also offers numeric display of statistical results, including maximum and minimum values, mean value, and graphic display of X-R control charts and histograms required for hardness evaluation. A nose-type indenter enables measurement on a flat top surface of a specimen and the inside surface of a cylindrical specimen. When testing multiple workpieces with the same height, continuous testing is possible by pressing the foot switch or the start button.

Thin back-flip FPC connector

The compact FH53M Series flexible-printed-circuit (FPC) connector saves valuable PCB real estate via a back-flip style actuator that minimizes the required mounting area. The connector has a 0.25-mm pitch, mounted depth of 3.2 mm, and height of 0.65 mm. With a weight of 0.01 g, the FPC connector is designed for a range of portable electronics including consumer, medical, point-of-sale, and wearable devices. It delivers the high-density transmission required to support Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) ver1.3 and MIPI D-PHY ver1.1 standards. The FH53M Series FPC connector has a user-friendly design, which includes wide tapers providing smooth FPC insertion. The connector has a top contact design that employs a movable metal spring latch, which ensures high reliability and signal continuity. The metal latching mechanism allows for horizontal FPC insertion/withdrawal and produces a clear tactile click when insertion is complete. The FPC tab lock firmly holds the FPC in place until the actuator is locked. The back-flip style actuator and bottom contact design provide a high retention force. The contact design also prevents solder wicking and flux penetration. The FH53M Series is currently available in a 7-position version. Hirose
