The HCS12 16-bit microcontroller (MCU) family now has a pair of moderately priced devices for high-performance industrial applications. The MC9S12E128 and MC9S12E64 MCUs operate on supply voltages from 3V to 5V with a 25 MHz bus speed in temperatures from -40°C to 125°C and are available with either 64 or 128 KB of third-generation, 0.25 µm flash memory. They integrate two 8-bit DACs, a 16-channel, 10-bit ADC, and a low-voltage reset/interrupt. Other features include a 40 ns minimum instruction cycle time, one synchronous SPI and three asynchronous SCI interfaces, I2C and IrDA interfaces, and up to 12 PWM channels, six of which include fault protection. A unique feature to both devices is a single-wire background debug module with on-chip emulation, trigger and trace hardware that is said to allow the use of low-cost serial cables for debugging. Available in 80-pin QFPs and 112-pin LQFPs, pricing for the new MCUs ranges from $6.40 to $8.30 each/10,000. MOTOROLA INC, Austin, TX. (512) 895-2000.
