International Engineering Education Design Conference to Focus on Software-Model Interplay

Oct. 2, 2013
An international engineering education design conference is slated to focus on the interplay between simulation software and geometric models.

The 68th Annual Midyear Conference of the American Society of Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Engineering Design Graphics Division will be hosted by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on their campus October 20-23, 2013.  The conference, which focuses on new developments and technologies for teaching computer-aided design and the application of graphics in engineering, is open to faculty, staff, and students at colleges, universities, and junior and community colleges from the United States and overseas. The central theme will be on the interplay between simulation software and geometric models, as software depends on the data created by the models and is critical when keeping design intent, manufacturing, and cost efficiency in mind.

The conference begins with a series of workshop sessions which are open to the general public (at $40 per session, subject to space availability). Workshops include: "Engineer Smarter: Secrets to Streamlining the Design Process Using PARTsolutions with CAD in the Educational Environment", "The Changing Face of Engineering Graphics”, “Reinventing a Traditional CAD Curriculum", and “Prototype Your Designs with Intelligence and Confidence Using SolidWorks Simulation".

Presentations such as "Using Multimedia Online Learning Tools to Supplement the Classroom Instruction" and "Drafting Project with Design Intent to Improve the Application of Dimensioning Specifications” will follow during a reception on the 20th. The next two days of the conference will be spent covering technical sessions on topics such as spatial visualization, modeling strategies and design intent, assessment techniques, graphic course content, management courses, and the evolution of graphics. The conference will conclude on the 23rd with a tour of Nypro’s, a manufacturer of precision plastic products, plant and a reception and awards banquet at the Worcester Art Museum.

Additional information about the conference and an online registration form for the full conference and the Sunday workshops can be found at http://edgd.asee.org/conferences/www/conference68.html.
