What you'll learn:

  • What’s Wind River up to these days.
  • Wind River’s cloud-based development tools.
  • How does AI relate to Wind River’s platforms and tools?

Wind River is well known for its VxWorks RTOS as well as its support for Wind River Linux (Fig. 1) and eLxr Pro, a Debian Linux implementation. The company also offers Wind River Zephyr for IoT and mobile embedded applications. And its Helix Virtualization Platform is commonly used in safety and high-reliability applications like software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and avionics applications.

I talked with Sandeep Modhvadia, Chief Product Officer at Wind River, about these as well as their cloud-based Wind River Studio Developer (watch the video above).

Wind River Studio Developer encompasses all Wind River platforms, providing development support for embedded systems as well as cloud-based DevOps. Studio includes artificial-intelligence-enhanced application creation and debugging. It supports secure, over-the-air (OTA) updates and application development on Microsoft Azure. Virtual Lab (Fig. 2) provides remote management of real hardware and virtual targets using first- and third-party simulation models.

Wind River’s platforms are edge-AI-ready. They also incorporate advanced networking features like time-sensitive networking (TSN). While VxWorks delivers single nanosecond determinism, its Linux and Zephyr operating systems provide access to a wide range of tools and middleware in addition to support for AI hardware and software frameworks.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
