The 56F8300 series microcontrollers (MCUs) integrate signal processing and fast flash memory into a 16-bit package capable of supplanting 32-bit devices in automotive and industrial applications. The chip is said to offer both signal processing and MCU instructions, while maintaining the ease of system design inherent in MCUs. The devices execute code from 32 to 256 KB of flash memory at up to 60 MIPS without the aid of acceleration technology. Future devices in the series will include up to 512 KB of flash. Other features include up to 76 GPIO lines, an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C (depending on device), controller-level safety functions, an integrated FlexCAN module, and a flash security feature to prevent unauthorized reproduction of data. Prices range from $8.13 to $15.93 each/10,000. A demo board, the MC56F8300DSK, is also available for $79.
