USB Encoder Links Legacy Devices

March 1, 2000

This single-chip USB keyboard encoder sports a PS/2 port for hot-plug connection of legacy keyboards and pointing devices. The Genikey encoder provides an easy method of connecting both a keyboard and mouse to a single USB port while allowing systems that do not come with PS/2 ports to readily use PS/2 input devices without special drivers. Genikey uses a single USB port, leaving the second USB port available for USB devices and making a USB hub unnecessary. Using only one USB port for both input devices minimizes system power consumption. An evaluation board, IC and cables cost $150.
