The development of Wide-Band-Gap (WBG) semiconductors has provided new tools for power conversion. Silicon, Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) each provide unique benefits and come with their own challenges that make it possible to create significantly better power supplies once the challenges are understood. In this presentation we will make a direct comparison between the different switch technologies, isolating efficiency benefits that can be directly attributed to the switch employed. In addition, we will look at the practical challenges that each switch type faces and discuss the limits these impose on a practical design.

Andrew Smith is the Director of Technical Outreach at Power Integrations. He has over 35 years of experience in switched-mode power conversion and has worked in power supply design, production, sales management, and marketing before transitioning to the training role. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Electronics Degree (First Class) from Middlesex University in England.
