Laird announces partnership with LoRa Alliance for IoT

March 2, 2015

Laird has announced a partnership with the LoRa Alliance at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015. The LoRa Alliance represents a consolidated effort by industry leaders to enable the Internet of Things (IoT).

An open, nonprofit association of members, the Alliance strives to standardize Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) deployed around the world to enable the IoT. Founded by Semtech, other members of the alliance include IBM, Microchip, Kerlink, and Actility.

Alliance members collaborate to drive global success of the LoRa Protocol (LoRaWAN), a new standard set to simplify local installations and enhance interoperability among connected things. Laird brings to the partnership years of experience in embedded wireless technologies, ranging from low-energy Bluetooth modules to enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, which are the primary means of connectivity in the upcoming IoT.

“Laird has shown incredible commitment and expertise in their development of the first generation of LoRa modules. We view them as a key partner in the LoRaWAN ecosystem as they enable applications and offer the flexibility that is needed as the industry embraces and deploys LPWAN,” said Ståle Pettersen, chairmen of the LoRa Alliance.

“Laird is at the forefront of IoT development in the Enterprise,” said Laird’s chief strategy and technology officer, Nigel Major. He added, “We are working closely with customers, partners, vendors, and now the LoRa Alliance to identify opportunities associated with the Enterprise IoT (EIoT) and to work towards a global standard.” Laird will be delivering new products, solutions, and systems to harness the power of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in the EIoT, delivering an entirely new level of value in mission critical applications.

Dr. Major is presenting a Power Hour presentation at Mobile World Congress on March 5 from 10-11 am regarding the challenges of protecting and connecting devices, including those on the IoT. MWC spotlights the leading technologies, products, and services that are shaping the future of the mobile industry.

Laird and the LoRa Alliance are attending MWC, which takes place in Barcelona, Spain, from March 2-5.

Laird is a global technology company focused on providing components and solutions that protect electronic devices from electromagnetic interference and heat, and that enable connectivity through wireless applications and antenna systems.

Products are supplied to all sectors of the electronics industry including the smartphone, telecommunications, data transfer and information technology, automotive, aerospace, defense, consumer, medical, mining, railroad, and industrial markets.
