RGGB LEDs Light Up Augmented Reality

Augmented-reality (AR) glasses with displays are becoming more common and less expensive. There are two main parts that drive AR displays: optics and LEDs. The LEDs need to be bright. However, multicolor LEDs typically must overcome one challenge: Providing a green color that matches what the eye can see. Conventional RGB LEDs tend to fall short in this area.

ams OSRAM’s VEGALED family consists of compact, 2.7- × 3.05-mm, multichip RGGB (red, green, green, blue) LEDs. Jeff Viola, Field Applications Engineer, talks about how they’re used with micro-displays like that found in AR glasses (watch the video above). These LEDs are designed to deliver precise color balance for smart glasses (Fig. 1). The small chip-to-chip distance between LEDs improves system efficiency that can reduce power requirements, delivering longer battery operation for mobile applications.

VEGALED delivers typical brightness values of red (615 nm) at 23 lumens, green (525 nm) at 70 lumens, and blue at 175 mW (Fig. 2). Each LED is individually addressable. They’re typically paired with liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) or digital-micromirror-device (DMD) imagers.

ams OSRAM has worked with Goertek to combine its VEGALED with Goertek’s full-color, extended-reality (XR) glasses.
