At the electronica 2022 trade show, Renesas Electronics addressed the automotive radar market with the introduction of a 4- × 4-channel, 76- to 81-GHz transceiver designed to meet the demanding requirements of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Designed along with Steradian Semiconductors, the new transceiver MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) is particularly suited for imaging radar, long-range forward-looking radar, and 4D radar, but it also can be used for corner and central-processing radar architectures.

Equipped with 4Tx and 4Rx channels, the RAA270205 supports up to 16 MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) channels. It can be cascaded to enable higher channel count and better radar resolution. The RAA270205 offers up to 5 GHz of bandwidth, with a 112.5-Msample/s ADC (analog-to-digital converter) sampling rate nearly 3X faster than competing devices. Power consumption is 1.2 W, with a noise figure of 9 dB3 dB less than other radar transceivers. Its chirp rate of up to 300 MHz/µs improves radar resolution and object detection.
