Network interface cards (NIC) are typically for Ethernet these days and they have progressed significantly from the basic network support provided in early days. Most Ethernet NICs provide more advanced functionality but many designers want even more performance and customization. This where SmartNICs come into play. 

SmartNICs are commonly found in data center environments but they are also applicable to embedded applications as well. They can provide high performance computing (HPC) at the network edge allowing filtering, compression/decrompression and other features to be handled by the SmartNIC instead of having the host handle these chores. This provides a more overall efficient use of resources. It can also make a system that is more responsive.
