To address the growing need for ever tighter error budgets in mixed-signal systems, Maxim Integrated Products of Sunnyvale, Calif., has introduced a family of low-temperature-drift voltage references. The MAX6133 series tightens the error budget by starting with good initial accuracy and low temperature drift to keep the part close to its initial accuracy. The references help minimize the systematic errors in the converter string to less than the least significant bit of a 16-bit converter by providing a more accurate starting point for the digitization.

The reference family's temperature drift is guaranteed to be less than 3 ppm/°C in the SO package and 5 ppm/°C in the microMAX package with a 5- by 3-mm footprint. The references' initial accuracy is 0.04% (max), and the dropout is only 200 mV at 5-mA source current. These specifications reduce the self-heating, which maintains better accuracy. Each reference can source or sink up to 15 mA and generate a maximum of 16-µV p-p noise (0.1 to 10 Hz).

Each listed specification is guaranteed over the −40°C to 125°C automotive temperature range. For a preliminary data sheet, go to www.maxim-ic.com/PRGraphics/PRPDF/MAX6133DS.pdf.

The applications for the references are placed where a constant voltage is needed. The low dropout and low temperature drift allow battery-operated devices to have a precision reference. Other applications include industrial controls, data-acquisition systems, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters and digital-to-analog converters, and portable instrumentation. For space-limited applications, the parts are available in a microMAX package with slightly degraded specifications.

The MAX6133 is available with four fixed output voltages of 2.5, 3, 4.096, and 5 V. Each part is available immediately. Prices start at $3.79 (1000-up, B grade SO, FOB USA).
