Taking RF tuner solutions to the next level, Microtune has un-wrapped a complete RF-IF front end for a new wave of cable modems and digital set-top boxes. Called MicroTuner MT2050, this fifth-generation biCMOS tuner integrates a low-noise amplifier (LNA), tuner-receiver, and IF amplifier on a 0.25-in.2 silicon die.

Compared to earlier versions, the MT2050 cuts RF costs by almost 25%, board space by 20%, and power consumption by 11%. Typical power consumption is 1.6 W. The MT2050 can receive frequencies in the 48- to 860-MHz range. It converts a selected channel to the desired IF to support cable TV; computer-controlled cable modems; DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 cable modems; and multituner digital set-top boxes.

Employing a dual conversion architecture, the MT2050 works seamlessly with all analog and digital demodulators. For that reason, it offers low phase noise and high linearity. The system noise figure is rated at 7 dB at maximum gain. The variable-gain LNA offers a 35-dB gain range. Also, the MT2050 requires an external 4-MHz crystal to generate the internal clock frequency.

The tuner comes in a 48-pin MLF package. Sampling now, the MT2050 costs $5.00 in quantities of 10,000. Microtune is using it to ready a complete cable modem reference design.
