Editorial: Memory and Storage in Turbulent Times
This week is the 20th anniversary of FMS, the Future of Memory and Storage conference, previously known as the Flash Memory Summit. Multiple world conflicts and tariffs have messed with supply chains even as AI data centers do much of the same. Still, technology continues to advance, delivering higher bandwidth and capacities on all fronts. So, for me, this week will be spent in Santa Clara covering FMS 2026.
I expect to see more ways to take advantage of DDR5 in systems like Compute eXpress Link (CXL) as well as multiplexed rank DIMMs (MRDIMMs). The latter allows servers to pack in more and faster memory modules that use multiplexed ping-ponging and buffer registers to hide DRAM die on a memory module.
... and here is some more on the multimedia side of things like why RAID works differently when you have NVMe storage.

I’ve been on a huge Z80 kick recently. I thought I would roundup a handful of articles about it in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
- Pac-Man: The Revolutionary Video Game Turns 45. I go over the Z80-based hardware and programming behind the original arcade game. Engaging for seeing how limited processing power produced sophisticated gameplay and graphics.
- A Rising Star. Revisits the Z80-powered Epson QX-10 and its ambitious VALDOCS productivity software. It offers a firsthand view of early personal-computer development and programming.
- So...The Z80 is Rising from the Dead—with an On-Chip DAC? Explores recreating the discontinued Z80 with open-source chip-design tools and low-cost fabrication. Compelling for showing how individuals can turn a classic processor design into modern silicon.
- Updated 8-Bit Processor Drives System-On-A-Chip Web Server. Introduces the eZ80, which expanded the architecture with more memory, faster operation and integrated networking. Useful as a period look at Zilog adapting its processor for embedded web systems.
Projects we build often have unforeseen impacts. You never know what how a single blinking LED might change the world.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

Andy Turudic
Technology Editor, Electronic Design
Andy Turudic is a Technology Editor for Electronic Design Magazine, primarily covering Analog and Mixed-Signal circuits and devices and also is Editor of ED's bi-weekly Automotive Electronics newsletter.
He holds a Bachelor's in EE from the University of Windsor (Ontario Canada) and has been involved in electronics, semiconductors, and gearhead stuff, for a bit over a half century. Andy also enjoys teaching his engineerlings at Portland Community College as a part-time professor in their EET program.
"AndyT" brings his multidisciplinary engineering experience from companies that include National Semiconductor (now Texas Instruments), Altera (Intel), Agere, Zarlink, TriQuint,(now Qorvo), SW Bell (managing a research team at Bellcore, Bell Labs and Rockwell Science Center), Bell-Northern Research, and Northern Telecom.
After hours, when he's not working on the latest invention to add to his portfolio of 16 issued US patents, or on his DARPA Challenge drone entry, he's lending advice and experience to the electric vehicle conversion community from his mountain lair in the Pacific Northwet[sic].
AndyT's engineering blog, "Nonlinearities," publishes the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Andy's OpEd may appear at other times, with fair warning given by the Vu meter pic.
